Children grow fast, so buy gear for the current class and check sizing before you order. This kids martial arts gear guide covers the basics parents usually need.
The starter list
- A gi or uniform that matches the school’s rules
- A belt, usually issued by the school
- A water bottle and a bag for gear
- Sparring gear only when the school asks for it
Sizing for kids
Use the kids size chart, not the adult one. Measure height and chest, and leave a little room for growth in the gi without making it too loose to train.
Safety basics
Check that mouthguards fit, that padding is intact, and that gear is not damaged. Replace anything that is cracked, torn or loose.

FAQ
Should my child buy sparring gear early?
Only if the school requires it. Many kids classes do not spar in the beginner stage.
How do I know it fits?
The gi should allow full movement without the sleeves or pants hanging unsafely. Ask your instructor if you are unsure.
