Your first class is mostly about learning how the school works. Nobody expects you to be good yet. This guide walks through a typical beginner session so you know what to expect.

Before you go

  • Call or email ahead and ask what to wear. Many schools lend a uniform for the first few classes.
  • Eat a light meal and drink water beforehand.
  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to meet the instructor.
  • Bring a water bottle and a towel.

During class

Most classes open with bowing and warm-up, then move into basic stances, footwork and a few techniques repeated many times. Expect to be sore the next day, and expect to be a little lost. Ask questions between drills, not in the middle of one.

Questions to ask afterward

  • What does a typical month of training look like?
  • How long between promotions?
  • What are the full costs, including uniform, testing and promotion fees?
  • Is sparring required, and when does it start?
  • Is there a trial or intro period?

Red flags

Pressure to sign a long contract on the spot, unclear pricing, or instructors who refuse to answer basic questions are worth noting. Take your time.

FAQ

Will I be the only beginner?

Usually not. Most schools run beginner groups, and classmates tend to be helpful.

Do I need to be in shape?

No. Fitness improves with training. Tell the instructor about any injury or health issue.
