A gi is the uniform for many martial arts. Styles differ: karate gis are usually looser and heavier, while jiu-jitsu gis are built for grips and are often lighter. This martial arts gi buying guide explains what to check.
Check your school’s uniform rules
Some schools require a specific color, patch or weight. Ask before you buy, especially if you plan to test for a belt.
Fabric and weight
- Heavier cotton: durable and traditional, but hot and slow to dry.
- Mid-weight: a balanced option for most beginners.
- Lightweight or ripstop: cooler and faster to dry, with less structure.
Fit and sizing
Check the size chart against your height and chest measurement. A gi should fit with room to move, and sleeves and pants should not sit too far above the wrist and ankle. Many gis shrink after the first wash, so follow care instructions.
Care
Wash in cold water, air dry when possible, and avoid high heat. Keep it dry between classes to prevent odor and fabric breakdown.
